Thanksgiving and DUIs

According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), each year the Thanksgiving holiday weekend has a marked increase in vehicle crashes and fatalities.   Between 2013 and 2017, there were over 800 fatalities from alcohol-related driving accidents during the Wednesday through Monday Thanksgiving holiday timeframe.[1]  In fact, the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving (also known as Thanksgiving Eve) typically has more DUI accidents and fatalities than July 4^th, graduation night, or even New Year’s Eve.  Recently, the Thanksgiving holiday timeframe has been associated with binge drinking and marijuana use and has been referred to as “Blackout Wednesday” or “Danksgiving.” 

Drunk driving, driving while taking certain medications, and driving under the influence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or other drugs impair driver ability and slow reaction time.[2]  These factors increase the likelihood of collisions. 

Before driving on Thanksgiving Eve or anytime during the Thanksgiving holiday timeframe, be sure to follow these important tips to stay safe:

• Designate a sober driver.  If you do not have a sober driver, use a ride share service, taxi, or public transportation to get home safely.
• Buckle up every time you get in the car.
• Stow your smartphone and avoid any distractions.  Focus on the road.
• Maintain a safe speed, taking into consideration road conditions, weather, and lighting.
• Ensure children are buckled in properly fitting car or booster seats.
• If you see someone driving recklessly, call 9-1-1.  Police will be out in force looking for people driving under the influence.
