I Was Injured in a Hit and Run Accident in Boca Raton! Can I Receive Compensation for My Injuries?

Posted on March 18, 2025

Last year, drivers in Florida were involved in 97,540 hit and run car crashes[1]. Palm Beach County alone was the site of 6,935 of these crashes, resulting in 1,611 injury victims and 20 deaths[2]. Hit and run car crashes can be even more emotionally devastating than typical car crashes since victims may be worried that they won’t be able to seek payment for their medical bills and expenses from the driver who injured them.

If you were involved in a hit and run car crash, immediately call 911 to start the process for a police report and medical care. While you are waiting for the police to arrive, write down any information you have on the car that hit you, such as make, model, color, license plate, and/or description of the driver. Similarly, if there were any passersby who witnessed the accident, write down their phone numbers and email addresses so the police can contact them to corroborate the details that you provide. If you have enough details, the police may be able to track down the driver.

As with any car accident, seek medical care immediately. If you choose not to take an ambulance from the scene of the accident, then visit the hospital or urgent care center as soon as possible. It’s essential to document all of your injuries to maximize the likelihood of receiving compensation for them.

Once you are able, contact a personal injury attorney that specializes in fighting for the rights of car accident victims. If the police are able to locate the driver that caused the accident, and the driver carries liability insurance or has a high level of assets, your attorney can file a claim against that driver for compensation for your injuries.

If the police cannot locate the driver and you carry an uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance policy, your attorney can seek compensation from your own policy. Can you contact the insurance company yourself rather than through an attorney? Legally, yes, you can. Something to keep in mind, though, is many insurance companies are notorious for lowballing their payouts to injury victims. Contacting the insurance company via an attorney puts them on notice that you are serious about seeking the compensation you deserve. It also provides you with an expert so that you are on an even playing field with the professionals at the insurance company.
