Many of us drive on bridges on a daily basis in Florida without giving it a second thought. But bridges are dangerous. They are magnets for car crashes. Moreover, crossing a drawbridge in particular poses additional risks that many of us never even think about.
Bridge Dangers
Have you noticed that traffic often becomes congested right before the entrance to a bridge? That’s because many drivers slow down in anticipation of the bridge. If a driver is texting, on a call, or has other distractions, they may not notice that traffic has slowed and cause a rear-end collision. Moreover, the traffic jam amplifies the chances of an irate driver exhibiting road rage and engaging in unsafe driving, also leading to an accident.
While on the bridge, the traffic lanes are often narrower than they are on the approaching road. If a car veers out of its lane to try and avoid a bicyclist, pothole, or debris in the road, they could easily side-swipe a vehicle in the next lane. This is especially perilous if the bridge lacks an opposing traffic lane divider, leading to a head-on collision. Once an accident occurs, it is very difficult for oncoming cars to stop in time or drive around the accident, due to a lack of shoulder, leading to a multi-car pile-up.
If an accident occurs on the bridge and the vehicles are traveling at a high rate of speed or skidding, the guardrails may not be able to withstand the impact. This can cause the cars to fall over the edge and into the water, a significant drowning risk for the driver and passengers.
High winds are also a problem for vehicles on bridges. Tall trucks can be pushed around or flipped over, creating a death trap for smaller vehicles near the truck.
In addition to the risks posed by regular bridges, drawbridges carry risks of their own. In Lantana last year, a drawbridge tender did not see a car on the bridge and proceeded to open the bridge with the car still on it. In West Palm Beach, another tender opened a bridge while a woman was walking on it, causing her to fall to her death.
What To Do If You Are Involved in an Accident on a Bridge
Your first step is to call 9-1-1. If the bridge is congested and there is no shoulder or other place to wait, stay in your car until help arrives. If it is safe and you are able, take photos of the accident scene. Seek medical attention right away. Even if you don’t leave the accident in an ambulance, make sure to go to the doctor or hospital within 24 hours to be examined. Follow all the advice from your healthcare provider. As soon as you are able, call ECanter Lawyers. We will advise you on your rights and the best course of action to compensate you for your injuries.
