A typical holiday safety message will remind you to take extra precaution when hanging holiday lights and to be careful placing flammable trees and gifts away from heaters, candles, and lights. Click here for more info on our general holiday safety recommendations.
But during a pandemic, we have a distinct safety message for you and your loved ones.
The holidays are prime time for us to gather with family and friends, enjoy meals together, and take some well-deserved time out from the daily pressure of work and school. But before you make your plans this year, please take time to consider the following recommendations so that you and your family will stay safe and healthy throughout the season.
If you are planning to host or attend a holiday gathering, ensure that all attendees are Covid-19 negative and have not been exposed to anyone with Covid-19 in the previous 14 days. Check the FDA website for more information. www.fda.gov
Keep gatherings small and outside if possible. If the get together needs to be indoors due to weather, keep windows and doors open to allow better air ventilation. Clean and disinfect surfaces before, during and after the gathering.
All attendees, even extended family members and close friends, should wear masks, wash hands frequently, and social distance 6 feet from each other. Keep in mind that those with increased risk of illness due to underlying conditions should avoid in-person gatherings this season.
Alternatively, consider celebrating the holidays with friends and family virtually!
Anyone involved in preparing food should wear masks and wash hands frequently. Preparation of plates by designated individuals is recommended over buffets where people can get too close to each other and all touch the same utensils.
If family or friend get togethers involve travel, review the Covid-19 positivity rates in the area where you are traveling. If the rates are high, consider putting your safety first and postponing your trip. Make sure to follow travel-related recommendations on quarantining.
Keep in mind that public transportation involves additional risks as you may be seated next to others who could be contagious. If you are traveling by train, bus, or plane, be sure to clean and disinfect the area where you will be traveling, wear your mask, and wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
Most importantly, if anyone feels sick, stay home! If you notice symptoms consistent with Covid-19, stay home and get tested. If your results are positive, be sure to inform anyone you were in contact with over the last several days. For more information, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website or click here.[1]
