Florida has a specific set of laws related to riding a motorcycle in the state. When you are injured in a motorcycle accident, these laws may or may not be a factor in resolving your claim for injury compensation. Listed below are five of the laws.
1. Wearing a helmet: Anyone under the age of 21 must wear a helmet if they are on a motorcycle. If you are 21 or over and have at least $10,000 of medical insurance benefits, then you are not required to wear a helmet in Florida.
2. Lane splitting: In this state, motorcycle riders are prohibited from traveling between lanes of traffic on their bike, which is a behavior called “lane splitting.”
3. Lane sharing: As a motorcyclist you are prohibited from riding side-by-side with more than one other motorcycle, a behavior called “lane sharing.”
4. Passing vehicles: Like other motorists, you are within your rights to pass other vehicles; however, you are prohibited from passing another vehicle inside the same lane as that vehicle. You must be able to pass in the other lane.
5. Use of a lane: You are entitled to a full lane. Other motorists are prohibited from improperly depriving you of the full use of the lane.
