Auto Safety Tips for Summer Road Trips: On the Road

Once you’ve ensured your vehicle is in proper working order and up to date on maintenance requirements, it’s time to review what you can do when you’re on the road to prevent an auto accident during your summer road trip:

• Don’t allow your phone to distract you. No text, call or voicemail is worth endangering your own health and safety and that of your passengers.
• Buckle up, no matter how short the trip is. Seatbelt use reduces rates of serious injuries and deaths in auto accidents. Always make sure yourself and your passengers are properly buckled when your vehicle is on.
• Keep extra drinking water in your vehicle. In case of a breakdown on the road, be sure to keep a gallon or two of water in your car. It’s a good idea to keep a high-calorie snack in your car too. These things will help you stay energized and hydrated in the event you have to wait a while for a tow in the summer heat.
• Include breaks in your schedule. Getting out of your car to stretch and have a snack is a good way to stay focused and alert. You can also use this break to check your messages, text or return a call.
• Don’t drive when you’re tired. Drowsy driving can be very dangerous. Your judgement, coordination and concentration can all be affected, plus you could nod off without realizing it. Fresh air and loud music aren’t going to wake you up. A better idea is to find a safe place to pull over and take a nap. Do not plan to drive more than several hours in a row, and fewer if possible.
