May is Bicycle Safety Month in America. In areas across South Florida, you may begin seeing more bikes on the roads for Bike to Work Week, May 16-20, which culminates in Bike to Work Day on Friday the 20th.
Car accidents involving bicycles are unfortunately not uncommon, especially in Florida. According to a Tampa Tribune article from August of last year, Florida had the highest rate of bicycling deaths in the nation at that time, at 0.57 deaths per 100,000 people. The nationwide average was 0.23 deaths per 100,000 people.
Nationwide, 726 bicyclists were killed in bike accidents in 2012. Another 49,000 suffered serious injuries. Most of the fatal accidents involved male bicyclists, and accidents between the hours of 4 pm and 12 am. Most of the deadly crashes occurred in urban areas.
