Traffic Deaths Rose 7.7 Percent in 2015

Posted on July 11, 2016

Fatal traffic accidents increased in 2015 by 7.7 percent. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released this preliminary data on July 1. In 2015, 35,200 people were killed in these auto accidents. In 2014, traffic accidents killed 32,675 people.

In a press release, NHTSA Administrator Dr. Mark Rosekind attributes the rise in fatalities partly to lower gas prices last year, which resulted in drivers putting more miles on the road. But he went on to say higher rates of driving were likely only one of many contributing factors, including human error. Dr. Rosekind said 94 percent of accidents can be traced back to human error and choices.

The 94 percent is important. It means that most crashes – fatal and otherwise – are preventable. They can be attributed to a wide range of careless driving behaviors, including:

  • Texting while driving
  • Drunk driving
  • Drowsy driving
  • Distracted driving
  • Reckless driving
  • Aggressive driving
  • Failure to obey laws
